“Who would’ve thought that a girl like me would double as a superstar?”
If you grew up in the 2000s or 2010s, you’ve heard the name Hannah Montana before. First premiering in 2006 on Disney Channel, the show follows Miley Stewart (Miley Cyrus) and her life as a normal teenager and her alter ego, hit pop-star, Hannah Montana. The show proved to be a hit, lasting four seasons and two movies, leading to Miley Cyrus’s rise to fame. After the show ended, Cyrus parted ways with Hannah, moving onto a solo career. For years, fans have anticipated a reboot or a new movie, but hope was lost. Until now.
On February 17th, a Disney+ press release announced that a special would be streaming on March 24th, exactly 20 years after the first episode release. 2000s kids screamed, and social media exploded with excitement. The first official trailer dropped on March 10th, opening with a car driving up with a license plate, “HM 20.”
In the special, Cyrus walked down memory lane as she visited recreated sets of the family living room, and the legendary Hannah Montana closet, where she sat down in an interview with “Call Her Daddy” host, Alex Cooper. The two dived into the show’s legacy, behind-the-scenes secrets, and more.
The special included four songs sung live in front of an audience. Cyrus opened with the cult-classical “Best of Both Worlds,” famously the theme song to the show. She also sang “This is the Life” as she first visited the recreated sets. Another song sung was the hit “The Climb,” from the 2009 hit movie. Lastly, she sang a new song specially for the special called “Younger You,” leaving many fans in tears.
The special featured appearances by many, including Selena Gomez, who guest-starred on the show as Hannah’s rival. Billy Ray Cyrus was present, as he famously was Miley/Hannah’s dad in the show, and pop singer Chappell Roan, who stated that the show is a huge inspiration to her as a young artist. While lots of cast members were missing from the show, many appeared at the red carpet event. Some included Jason Earles (Miley’s brother Jackson), Mosies Arias (Surf Shop owner and frenemy Rico), and Cody Linley ( Miley’s love interest, Jake).
Notably missing, though, were Miley’s lovable best friends Lily and Oliver. While Lily actor Emily Osment left a heartfelt message on social media explaining that the filming schedule for her show “George and Mandy’s First Marriage” kept her from attending, Oliver actor Mitchel Musso has not yet said what kept him from coming.
While there is still no word of a reboot or second movie, the special provided a heartfelt closure for both Cyrus and fans, allowing fans to let out their inner child. If you’re a Hannah fan, or if you just “may even be a rockstar,” be sure to give this a watch.
