At the end of the school year, Mr. Chernick plans to retire from Clarkstown North after 37 years of teaching, of which 30 were at North. Chernick is a highly active member of the Clarkstown North community, as he is currently a mathematics teacher and co-department chair, co-Mu Alpha Theta and Math League advisor, and the GO treasurer. He will be missed, as he has made a significant contribution to our school, faculty, and students.
When asked what his favorite memory was from Clarkstown North, Chernick told me that he was honored to receive Teacher of the Year and selected as a keynote speaker for the National Honor Society induction in the same year. He notes that these honors were “especially meaningful because they came from the students of North.”
Mr. Chernick brings an enthusiastic spirit to the subject of mathematics. He is particularly passionate about teaching “any class that has the word Calculus in its name.” This school year, for instance, he has taught the new AP Precalculus course as well as Multivariable Calculus 3. When he leaves North, Mr. Chernick will particularly miss “the energy that comes from working in a school, both from the students and the staff.”
For his retirement plans, Mr. Chernick intends to travel, engaging in activities such as “skiing and cycling,” and he’s especially excited about “learning and trying new things.” Most of all, Chernick is looking forward to “enjoying the freedom” of setting his schedule. As for the advice he has for future teachers, Chernick recommends that they “take advantage of the opportunities at North” and “learn from experienced colleagues.” On a more practical note, he also suggests that newer teachers should start to plan for their retirement as “the years will fly by.”
Chernick has been an amazing Chairperson and colleague, and a respected and beloved teacher, and Clarkstown wishes him all the best on his retirement.
