On Monday, September 22nd, students from the College Small Business Marketing classes at Clarkstown North stepped outside the classroom to gain real-world insight into the operations of a local small business, Dr. Davies farm, a family-owned attraction in Clarkstown that offers hayrides, apple picking, and a pumpkin patch. The students were given an in-depth look at how small businesses operate behind the scenes. Students learned about business concepts such as community partnerships, marketing strategies, and innovation. They gained firsthand knowledge of how marketing strategies are crafted to support local businesses.
During this field trip students learned about the role of tradition in building customer loyalty, while still learning about meeting the expectations of modern consumers, like themselves. For many students, the experience sparked interest in entrepreneurship and offered a perspective on the dedication and creativity required to run a successful business. The information and marketing strategies learned at the farm will be applied to Clarkstown North’s very own North Store by the business students.

While the focus of the field trip was to provide students with insights and examples of small business operations, the day also offered time for socializing and engaging in fun activities. Students were able to go apple picking and relax on the farm’s benches, enjoying good food. Small Business Marketing student Serena Boschen reflected on the experience, saying, “I got to go apple picking, which was a lot of fun. I enjoyed learning inside information about a small family-owned business.” Fellow student Remy Adler also shared her thoughts, saying, “There are so many things to do at the farm, and I would love for North business classes to continue doing these fun field trips.”
Overall the field trip to Dr. Davies farm was a success with the business classes. Hopefully many more trips like this one will be taken in the future.
